This workshop will be an exploration of the Science and Practice of Mindfulness and Meditation.

At this workshop we shall:

  • Explore a few various types of mindfulness and meditation practices practised throughout the different cultures of the world
  • The Blissful Brain - Mindfulness and Meditation workshopLook at the differences in types of meditation related to levels of awareness
  • Look at how the brain seems to be pre-wired to enable and benefit from the practice of meditation as discovered from recent studies in neuroscience
  • Look at the effect meditation has had on long term mantra based  meditators
  • Look at the effect meditation has on health in general
  • Explore the spiritual/psychological reasons to practice meditation
  • We will also practise a few different types of mindfulness and meditation practices throughout the day

The practices will include:

  • a mindful awareness exercise
  • a spoken guided meditation
  • and a simple Indian breath/sound (mantra) based technique

 

Who?

This workshop is being delivered and led by David Nock who:

  • has been studying practical philosophy for 33 years
  • practicing mantra based meditation for 38 years
  • studied various other types of meditation practices
  • and has a keen interest in the positive effect meditation has on humanity

David has run this workshop quite a few times now and it is always a peaceful, stilling and enjoyable experience.

PRACTICAL MINDFULNESS – TO SIMPLY BE!

You are invited to a study day entitled:

‘Practical Mindfulness – To Simply Be’ Workshop

at Newland House, Edgbaston, Birmingham

On Sunday 21st February, 9 30am to 4 00 pm

Cost £20 including vegetarian buffet lunch and all refreshments

Everyone is invited, including family and friends.

Throughout the day we will explore:

  1. A holistic model of Man.
  2. How a superficial essence covers up our true authentic essence.
  3. How the quality of the energy of nature (the Guna) affect body, mind and heart.
  4. What forces and influences affect us that prevent us simply being our true Self.
  5. The role the human brain plays in all of this, including a TED talk from an eminent neuroscientist who had a stroke.
  6. What we can do to regain balance and simply be.
  7. Mindfulness and Meditation, the difference between the two.
  8. Practice of Tai Chi, Intuitive Drawing and simple Sounding.

The aim of these workshops is to provide a useful opportunity for students, friends and family to meet together and practice with a little more focus in a conducive, friendly environment, what has been discussed to enable us to discover more fully from a practical point of view what is presented at the evening philosophy meetings. A very useful and enjoyable day for self-discovery.

The day will be conducted in the school’s usual open and relaxed manner, beginning at 9:30am and finishing at 4pm. The cost for the day is £20 which includes a vegetarian buffet lunch and all other refreshments.

Because of the practical aspect of the day the numbers will be limited to 20. The tutor will be David Nock. Doors will open at 9am for registration, coffee and biscuits. You can reserve your place by enrolling below.

 

PARKING

Parking is available on both sides of Plough and Harrow Road and the top of Beaufort Road, if these places are taken then there is also free parking in; Waterworks Rd, which is opposite Plough and Harrow Rd down the bottom end-the other side of Monument Rd, Highfield Road (opposite Plough and Harrow Road on the other side of the Hagley Road past the Harborne Road traffic lights, and at Duchess Road Car Park (B16 8JD) – this can be accessed by driving down Beaufort Road and as the road bears right and continues into Huntley Road the car park is on the right (there is a charge for parking here of £1.80 for 3 hours, not sure how much it is for all day).Please allow time to walk to School from your vehicle so we can start at 9 30 am.

Mindful Awareness is just the beginning Workshop

You are invited to a study day entitled:

‘Mindful Awareness is Just the Beginning’ Workshop

at Newland House, Edgbaston, Birmingham

On Sunday 28th June 2015, 9 30am to 4 00 pm

Cost £20 including vegetarian buffet lunch and all refreshments

The overall theme for the day is ‘Mindful Awareness is Just the Beginning!’

On the day we will:

  • Look at concepts
  • Undertake activities
  • And have discussions based around observation and attention and why these are important

We will explore:

  • what observes?
  • what is mindful of what?
  • mindfulness is just the beginning of what?
  • how can this lead to wisdom and happiness?
  • and the three aspects of man: Physical, Intellectual and Emotional (or Body, Mind and Heart)

mindful-right-lefthand-brainThere will be a showing of a video of a TED lecture (technology permitting) given by an eminent American neurologist. She gives a talk about her direct experience of seeing the brain from the ‘inside out’ during her own experience of suffering from a stroke.

She shares some thought provoking conclusions.

This will lead us into a discussion on the right hand/left hand brain and the part that these play in Mindful Meditation practices.

Activities offered to help us explore all this will be:

  • Tai Chi
  • Calligraphy
  • and Sounding (basic Sanskrit vowels, everyone will be able to do it).

All three demand attention, raise awareness and work on different aspects of our physical/mental/emotional being.

Practical Mindful Awareness

at Newland House, Edgbaston, Birmingham

On Sunday 1st March 2015, 9 30am to 4 00 pm

The day will consist of:

  • A discussion based around the three aspects of Man;

Physical, Intellectual and Emotional or Body, Mind and Heart.

  • We shall look at how the qualities of the energy of nature affect these three aspects of our being, which relates to the levels of awareness.
  • A continuation of exploring the question ‘What Am I’, to see if there is a part of us unaffected by the qualities of nature.
  • We shall consider in what areas of our life we feel we have control and in what areas we feel we have no control.
  • We shall consider and practice a practical mindful approach to develop attention to the moment and therefore liberate us from old habitual patterns of living (waking sleep) using very simple everyday activities.
  • There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion, questions, observations and feedback.

The aim is to have an interesting, happy, peaceful and inspiring day. All are welcome including any family or friends you think may be interested, although we do have to limit the numbers to 30 people for practical reasons.
